Off Season Tips

To make sure your golf game is ready for next season, it's very important to take part of the winter and REST! Over the summer months we try to squeeze in as many rounds as possible and when the snow starts to fly, sit back, relax and watch a hockey game!

Stretching on the off season and even holding a small weighted object and pretending to swing will keep your muscles loose and make the transition in the spring that much easier.

Here is a little lesson to help you look forward to my new assistant for next golf season - Si Roberston.

Sand Shot Tip for Snow Birds

Below is a good sand shot lesson from Lee Westwood for those snow birds heading south this winter. A common thing I heard all summer was "I hate all the sand traps in Florida", well hopefully this quick tip will help you get out of the beach on the course, and save more time for the beach at the ocean!

Cape Breton Celtic Classic

So far my week in at Cape Breton has been awesome. They are quick to prove that Cape Breton hospitality is hands down the best! Everyone has been very welcoming and players from all over the world are experiencing what we have to offer in Nova Scotia. I played in the pro-am yesterday and had a fun day even though it rained all day. I shot 72 which wasn't to bad in the conditions and the team I played on finished 3rd! My preparation for the event is going as planned and with a good finish this week I can qualify to play in next weeks Tour Championship in London, Ontario.

Round one starts tomorrow and I tee off at 2:10 off #10 tee.

Tournament Recaps

PGA of Canada Atlantic Zone Championship --- 68-74 (+2) --- 4th place
Last week I played in my first zone championship and put myself in a great position to win. I shot round of 68-74 (+2) to finished tied for 4th place. I had the lead until 14th hole during the final round until I had an unfortunate break the green and settled for a par on the par 5. That put me down one, and then I made bogies on 15, 16, and 17 which put me out of it, and Kevin Dugas went on to win for the 14th time. It was great to be back in contention in a big tournament and I can't wait to get my next crack at Mr. Dugas!

This was a great event thanks to Ken-Wo Golf Club and sponsors Titleist/FootJoy!

Clark Cup Open --- 76-74 (+6) --- 2nd place
After playing in the zone championship I headed to PEI to play in the Clark Cup Open at Summerside. I did not play well this weekend but managed to grind out a second place finish. Summerside was in phenomenal condition and the greens were immaculate once again! I shot round of 76-74 and finished second to Nick Peters who shot an impressive 66 (-6) in the final round. This is the second year in a row I was runner-up at this event, third times a charm!

Next up is the Stanhope Open August 2-4.

PGA of Canada

PGA of Canada - Candidate for Membership
I have taken a new step in my professional career. On May 17th, I became a member of the PGA of Canada. I will be a teaching professional at Eagle's Chance Golf Center and will be running junior programs, ladies programs, private lessons, and coaching. Teaching golf has always been a passion of mine, and the PGA of Canada is giving me the tools to excel as a teaching professional.

Helping grow the game of golf in Pictou County and Atlantic Canada is going to be exciting and rewarding for both myself and my students. My philosophy is to make golf simple and enjoyable for everyone of all skill levels.

What does this mean for my golf career?
This is the best move in my professional career to date. I have not given up the dream of playing on the PGA Tour, this is just a different pathway that will give me playing experience, and help me mature as a golfer. I will be playing 10-15 events in Atlantic Canada this summer and will keep everyone posted on my progress.

If you are interested in golf lessons, or know someone who might be, check out my new lessons section of my website.

Back in Nova Scotia

After a long journey, we arrived back in Pictou County last week. Now it's time to plan out the next stage of my professional career. For now, I am back at Velsoft managing the online advertising as I plan the next leg of my journey.

As I look back at the past three months, I believe I did everything I could to prepare myself for qualifying school. Unfortunately, golf is a game of inches, and at q-school I missed the hole by a an inch here and there a few times and it ended up being the difference. I am happy with my performance at q-school. I proved that I belong to be there and I did not embarrass myself by any means. My first attempt at qualifying school was a great learning experience and I will be able to apply my knowledge to my next attempt.

What's Next?
I am continuing to work on my game with a large portion of that focus on my mental game, so if anyone knows a good sports psychologist, please point me in the right direction! As of right now I am trying to receive a sponsors exemption into the PGA Tour Canada's Cape Breton Celtic Classic at the Lakes course in Ben Eion, Nova Scotia September 2-8, 2013.

I am also considering joining the PGA of Canada to be more involved in the golf community in Atlantic Canada and continue to help grow the game throughout Atlantic Canada. Update on this will soon be announced.

I would like to thank everyone who helped me out over the past few months, without your help, none of this would be possible. Whether you made a generous contribution, gave me a bed to sleep in, or even carried my golf bag around for a few days, thank you for everything!

Round 4 Update

After shooting 73 yesterday in round 3, I needed a good round today to give myself a chance. I played a great round of golf today but fell a little short. Today I shot two under par 70. Which left me with a four day total at 4 over par and a few shots outside the number to get status. Today I hit all the shots I needed to, I just didn't make the putts. I am happy with my performance here this week I just wish a few more putts had of fallen. I played very solid golf all week and gave myself a chance to gain status, but in a field of 312 golfers, you really need to putt well to seal the deal.

I learned a lot of valuable lessons this week as this was my first attempt at any qualifying school. I am going to build off this week heading into the summer and I am looking forward to q-school this fall.

74-75-73-70 (+4)

Round 2 update

Round 2 got off two a great start today as I went out in 4 under par 32. But after a few mental errors on the back nine I struggled to a 43 and finished with a 75 on the Champions Course. I am still inside the top 100 and I am 4 shots off conditional status and 7 shots off full status. With 36 holes to go I am still far from out of it and I am going to put together an entire round and get myself back into the heat!

Round two scores are HERE

I do not know what my tee time is for tomorrow because a few groups did not finish today I will not know until the morning. I should be out around 9am on the Legends course (top half of field is off legends with the leaders going off last).

Q-School Update

The past two months of practicing in Florida was all for this week. Everything I did was to prepare me for qualifying school and the day has come. I opened with a 74 (+2) on the Legends course on cold and windy morning. My ball striking was very good today and I am happy with my opening. If I strike the ball this way all week and get my putter out of hibernation, I have no doubt I will end the week with status on the PGA TOUR Canada.

Results can be found at

I tee off at 12:30pm tomorrow on the Champions course.

Ocala Open Recap

Last week I played in the Ocala Open which is one of the bigger mini-tour events in central Florida. I did not have a great showing and shot rounds of 75-74 to miss the cut by 4 strokes. The first round I played very solid for 16 holes and just had two really bad ones. However this round did mark a record for me, longest round of golf I've ever played, six hour and twenty minutes. The second round was a bit faster as we finished right on six hours. I got out of the gates fast in round two with birdies on 2 and 3, but it was hard to keep things going as every time I made a birdie, by the time I hit my next shot, I forgot I had birdied the last hole. It was a good mental test as we had to constantly regain focus and be patient throughout both rounds.

I will not be playing any more events on my schedule until qualifying school April 9-12 in California. They just announced today that the field is full at 312 players. Only 40 players will get status so I will need to play well to get my card.

Lakewood Ranch Recap

I played the Lakewood Ranch Open Just over a week ago now and had a very positive event. It was a 72 hole event and I shot rounds of 69-75 to finish at Even Par and miss the cut by two strokes. I played very solid golf both days just didn't have the bounces and didn't have the putts falling. This was my second event in a row where I shot even par through 36 holes. This is a sure sign things are coming together.

I had great Pictou County hospitality this week as well as a cheering section and a great caddie. Thanks for everyone coming out to show their support!

Wildwood Open Recap

I collected my first paycheck of the year this weekend at the Wildwood Open! I shot rounds of 73-71 (E) to finish tied for 26th in the 94 player field. It was a great weekend as I played some of my best golf since I arrived down here. I hit the ball extremely well and was very happy with the outcome as I received a check for $200. It might not be much, but it's a check!

Thanks to my little gallery for following me both days and cheering me on! I had some great support from my pro-am partners on Friday as well as a couple Nova Scotians!

My next event is the Lakewood Ranch Open on March 7-10.

Sara Bay Recap

Sara Bay Country Club sure showed it's teeth today with tough pin locations, firm greens, and gusting winds. Less than half the field today broke 80, and not a single player broke par. Two players shot even par and the guy I played with ended up winning in a playoff. I on the other hand did not fair out to well. I got off to a
bad start and as I tried to recover I just could not convert birdies and had a few hiccups along the way.

I will spend the next few days practicing hard and playing a few courses to work on my thought process for the Wildwood Open this weekend.

Waterlefe Round 2 Recap

I struggled with my all around game and battling the high winds did not make it any easier. I did however take a lot of positives from the event. In the first round I made 7 birdies and shot an under par round in only my third competitive round. Not bad for having only been down here two weeks. When I came down here in 2010, it took me 11 tournament rounds to break par. So looking at things from that perspective, I am happy with my weekend and things are only going to continue to progress. When q-school rolls around I will be in fine shape to give myself a chance to qualify.

I had a couple familiar faces greet me on the first tee yesterday and it was great to see their support!

Waterlefe Round 1 Recap

I Played a good round of golf today. I shot 70 (-2) and I am tied for 6th heading into the final round tomorrow. I made 7 birdies on the day which was a huge confidence boost and I am looking forward to playing well again tomorrow.

Here are my stats from today for a few of you numbers people.
Fairways hit: 11/14
Greens in regulation: 10/18
Putts: 28

Laurel Oak Recap

I played my first event on the West Florida Golf Tour today and it was a rough one but I came out with a lot of positives and confidence. I shot 78 (+6) and finished T35 of 59 players. The course played tough today as 69 was low and the wind and tough pin locations made if difficult to score well and easy to make bogeys. I hit the ball very well off the tee today hitting 11/14 fairways and probably averaged over 325 yards, so I gained a lot of confidence with my driver. My round ended on a positive note as I played the last five holes 2 under par, and narrowly missed two other birdie chances.

My next event will be this Friday and Saturday as I play my first 36 hole event of the year.

Forest Lake Recap

I got my first competitive round of the year out of the way yesterday and it got off to a great start as I birdied my first hole. But after making bogies on 2, 4, 10 and 13, and no other birdies on the day, I finished with a 3 over par 75 and tied for 13th place out of 24 players, three shots out of the money. The day was a grind as I only hit 8 greens in regulation and 6 of 14 fairways. I was forced me to grind out pars all day. Overall the day was good for me as I got back into the competitive environment and now I know what I need to focus my practice on for the next few days.

For those Big Break fans out there, I played with final four contestant Chan Song on Friday. He is a great guy and only ate grass on the first tee, not every shot like on the show!

I will be playing another one day event on Monday in Sarasota, FL.

It's Birdie Time!

After a solid week of relentless practicing, I am ready to get into action. I will play my first tournament tomorrow at Forest Lake Golf Club. It is just a small event on the Moonlight Golf Tour but it is competition and that is what I need right now. I will probably play another one-day moonlight event next week before playing my first 36 hole event on the West Florida Tour next weekend. I am extremely happy with how fast my game is coming together. My biggest struggle so far is distance control, but after about three hours of doing distance control drills yesterday, I feel confident I will be able to compete tomorrow.

I will post results on here tomorrow night so check back to see how the first battle ends up!

Arrived in Florida

We safely arrived in Florida Wednesday night after four days, 2098 miles, and barely any screaming kids in the back seat! After spending yesterday getting settled in and all set up, I am ready to start practicing today. I hope to start playing events in mid-February, but that will depend how I feel my game is shaping up. There is no point in entering events and wasting money if my short game is not sharp enough to compete. After a good week or two of practice and playing I should be ready to start collecting cheques!

Fundraising Campaign

>>  Looking for 50 people to contribute $100  <<

As some of you already know, I am heading to Florida at the end of this month to prepare for PGA Tour Canada (formally the Canadian Tour) Qualifying School. I will be spending three months in Central Florida to practice and play events. I already have some financial support to cover qualifying school and rent expenses, but I still need more financial support to enable me to play events to get my game back into shape for qualifying school.

I am not looking for a large amount of money from one individual; I am looking for small contributions of $100 from 50 people. With your help, you can help me reach my goal of 50 contributors. This will allow me to take the next step in my professional career and one step closer to one day playing the PGA Tour.

Florida Bound

As some of you may already know, I will be heading to Florida at the first of February to practice and prepare for PGA Tour Canada qualifying school (formally the Canadian Tour). Here is a brief description of my plans for 2013.

Round 1: Florida from February 4 - May 3
I will spend 3 months in Central Florida competing on the West Florida Golf Tour and practising to prepare for qualifying school in April. I plan to play 10-12 events to help me get back into top form.

You can find my tentative schedule HERE for my three months in Florida.

Round 2: Back to Pictou County
It will be time to hit the road back home at the first of May and hold a fundraiser or two to get money together to play on the PGA Tour Canada. I will then head to Southern Ontario to prepare for the PGA Tour Canada season and play a few events on the Great Lakes Tour.

Round 3: June - September
I plan to play the full 8 event schedule on the PGA Tour Canada. Events will start in Vancouver and work thier way East to Ontario for a couple events to finish off the season in September.

Round 4: September - November
I hope to compete in Tour qualifying school and possibly European Tour qualifying school as well.

All of this is not going to be possible without financial support. Thanks to local business Tom Brady (not the NFL Quarterback) I have gotten off to a great start as Tom has been rounding up money for me. Without the help from Tom, I would not have the opportunity to pursue golf full time again. If you know Tom, or run into him on the street, do me a favour and thank him for his generosity and persistence.

If you would like to become a financial contributor, please contact myself or Tom Brady for more information.
